identity and book design for dancing star press, the new publishing outlet of henry weikel and daniel ortiz. dancing star focuses on new and out-of-print works in inherently light forms, like the novella and short collection, with its first release presenting a selection of late ghost stories by henry james, edited and introduced by henry weikel.
the custom drawn mark and overall identity give form to dancing star’s mission to “capture the qualities of lightness and ecstasy,” looking to cosmology in medieval illuminated manuscripts—planetary orbits, circular formations, stars “held up by angels,” as well as visual patterns from the ornate illustrations of the très riches heures du duc de berry to the decorated practicality of the trevelyon miscellany.1
the cover detail of the book is adapted from the baptistry vault of the church of santo domingo de guzmán, uayma, mexico.
